Each solution can be explained by a set of work divided in to three main categories. 

• New Development - Ideas that do not currently exist and need to be brought to life
• Code Migration - Working ideas that need to be migrated to a new environment or language
• System Integration - The "glue" between different systems, either newly developed or existing

These categories are not mutually exclusive, but they are different types of development that can be applied to solve different types of problems. Most solutions require a combination of two or more of these areas to be successful. 

For example, a solution that required existing Delphi code to be migrated to the .NET Framework, and also needed to be integrated with SAP via XML Web Services uses a combination of System Integration and Code Migration. This is best illustrated in the overlapping area of blue and red above.
